The mineralogy of process stream slurries is a key factor in determining the efficiency of a concentrator. Many on-line measurement systems have been developed and deployed in processing plants that measure elemental concentrations in process streams. These systems use techniques such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and prompt gamma/neutron activation analysis (Smallbone, 1997; Lim et al, 2005).
The procedure to conduct on-line optimization for a plant has these three optimization problems solved in sequence. First, plant data is extracted from the distributed control system. Then gross errors are removed, and the data is reconciled to satisfy process material and energy balances.

In my opinion this is an excellent presentation on what is possible in process control to optimize processing plants. It is interesting to note that feed variability is blamed for most issues, so that much more emphasis should be placed on combined optimization of mining and processing, including blending for grade, mineralogy, hardness and transfer size.
